education
January 2007--ctober 2010
PhD student in “Foundations of life sciences and their ethical consequences”, a joint program of European School of Molecular Medicine and Università Statale of Milan, at IFOM-IEO campus Milan
2006 (December)
Master Degree in Medical Biotechnology at the University of Bologna with grades 110 out of 110 with honors. I discussed a thesis with title: “Effect of Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor on the physiology and pathology of cardiomyocytes”. Supervisor in Bologna: Professor Giovanna Cenacchi, supervisor in Triest: Professor Mauro Giacca
March 2006-December 2006
member of the Laboratory of Molecular Medicine at the International Center of Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology, ICGEB, in Trieste, where I worked on my master project on the effects of Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor on the heart. My supervisor was Professor Mauro Giacca, group leader of the Laboratory in Molecular Medicine and Director of ICGEB, Trieste, and Dr Lorena Zentilin, Staff Scientist of the same group.
October 2004-March 2005
visiting student at the Technische Universität Berlin, Germany, where I attended for a semester the Master of Science in Medical Biotechnology. I took the following classes: Cellular Physiology, Medical Biochemistry and the practicals: Analyis of Molecular Data. My supervisor was Professor Roland Lauster. I also participated in the International Berlin Bioinformatic Center-Workshop on Gene Annotation & Alternative Splicing (Berlin, December 2004)
2001 (September)-2007(March)
member of the Collegio Superiore, which is an exclusive studentship program of the University of Bologna based on merit. Students are required to have a strong cultural motivation and broad interdisciplinary interests. Students must achieve average marks of 28/30 in all exams taken at the University, take four additional interdisciplinary exams each year and participate in several advanced seminars during the academic year.
2004 (July)
Bachelor Degree in Biotechnology at the University of Bologna with grades 110 out of 110 with honors, with a thesis with title: “Analysis of gene NIS in patients affected by familial non medullar thyroid cancer” (Medical Genetics laboratory directed by Professor Giovanni Romeo)
2001
High school certificate in scientific studies with top marks (100/100) at Liceo Scientifico Fulcieri Paulucci di Calboli, Forlì
1999-2000
Junior high school year at Berthoud High School, Colorado, USA
work experience
March 2008-to date
ecancermedicalscience, associate editor and medical writer. Ecancermedicalscience (ISSN 1754-6605) is the open access cancer journal founded by the European Institute of Oncology in Milan. It is a non-profit, independent, online journalpublished by Cancer Intelligence .
November 2007-March 2008
within the 1° year of PhD lab-rotation program at IFOM-IEO campus, I was a member of the “Bioinformatics and evolutionary genomics of cancer” research group directed by Francesca Ciccarelli, where I studied the evolution of the Shc family of adaptor proteins
June-November 2007
within the 1° year of PhD lab-rotation program at IFOM-IEO campus, I was a member of the “Biology and signal transduction of normal and cancer stem cells” research group directed by Dr Giuliana Pelicci, where I worked with glioblastoma primary cells grown as neurospheres and characterized putative cancer stem cell markers
January-June 2007
within the 1° year of PhD lab-rotation program at IFOM-IEO campus, I was a member of the “Transcriptional mechanisms in development and tumor formation” research group directed by Professor Francesco Blasi, where I gained expertise in the field of developmental biology working with Prep1 knock-out mice at E6-E8.5 days
March-December 2006
For my Master project, I worked in the laboratory of Molecular Medicine at ICGEB, Trieste, under the supervision of Lorena Zentilin and Professor Mauro Giacca. The purpose of my project was to evaluate the effects of Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor (VEGF) on the physiology and pathology of cardiomyocytes in culture. I worked on primary heart cultures, which I extracted from heart ventricular of both from neonatal and adult rats
September 2003-July 2004
For my bachelor thesis, I worked in the Medical Genetics laboratory of the University of Bologna (www.lagem.it), directed by Professor Giovanni Romeo, under the supervision of Elena Bonora and Emanuele Panza. I graduated with a degree thesis in Molecular Genetics, with title “Analysis of gene NIS in patients affected by familial non medullar thyroid cancer”. My research focused on screening for candidates genes involved in the pathogenesis of familial non medullar thyroid cancer at locus 19p13.2, which has been demonstrated to be in linkage with the pathology. I concentrated on NIS, the sodium iodide symporter, which has a fundamental role in the thyroid iodine metabolism
